Scout emerged from the storage room. Paranoia made her move slowly. At any second, Zoe would lunge out of the shadows and attack. But she found the lab empty.

To her surprise, the sun was setting over the hills. She’d already lied once to an officer of the law. If anyone caught her sneaking around the chemistry building, even Dr. Crosier wouldn’t be able to save her.

She exited the building, intending to blend in with the crowd. But as she stepped into the quad, she found it empty. Not a single student in sight. Was everyone at dinner, or were the curfew rules stricter than she had believed?

Scout quickened her pace, her stomach reminding her she hadn’t eaten since she’d shared french fries with Brody. As she passed the literature building, a figure in an upstairs window caught her eye. Was that Professor Adler? The shape disappeared.

As she hurried on, she noticed a pair of people approaching from between two buildings. The police? She held her breath, preparing to make a run for it. But as they got closer, she recognized Maddy and Brody.

"We were worried about you. Where have you been?" Maddy asked.

Brody moved beside Scout. For a heartbeat, it seemed like he meant to place an arm around her shoulder.

“We’ve been looking for you everywhere,” he said. “The police forced Kane Grove to put new curfew rules in place. Nobody out after dinner.”

“The curfew is ridiculous. I’ve heard rumblings about students organizing against the authorities.”

Scout walked with her friends. "I didn’t mean to worry you. I had to check something in the chemistry lab. Come on, let’s talk while we head to the dorm."

In the distance, another officer patrolled the area outside the library. He placed a radio against his lips, but Scout didn’t think he’d spotted them.

"I found my calculus assignment in Cade’s locker," Scout said. "He must have hacked my cloud drive. But that’s not all. I found an OBD-II scanner and a flash programming tool in his locker. He had the tools to mess with LeVar’s car."

Maddy’s eyes widened. "Dude!"

"I know, right? But something confuses me. Cade was a bully, but why would he destroy university equipment and set off stink bombs?"

“You know what else is weird?” Brody asked. “Cade forced people to do his homework. That tells me he wasn’t the brightest bulb on campus. Yet he knew how to reprogram a car’s computer system? Sounds farfetched.”

“That’s a fair point. Maybe he’s car smart and book dumb.”

Brody pondered Scout’s words.

She told them about the two encounters with Zoe and finding Benjamin’s name in a lab book.

“Don’t worry about Zoe,” Maddy said. “Both of together can take her.”

Either way, Scout didn’t want to get into a fight.

“And what about the argument between Zoe and Benjamin?” Brody asked. “Did you find out what that was about?”

Scout shook her head. "Not yet. Benjamin might be the key to understanding all of this."

They reached the dorm as the final rays of sunlight disappeared.

“This is far as I can go,” Brody said.
